10 Home Remedies for Sunburn

1. Take a Bath
Adding a few heaping tablespoons of baking soda to cool bath water makes a sunburn-soothing remedy. Just keep your soaking time down to 15 to 20 minutes. If you soak any longer, you risk drying out your already lizard-like skin. When you've emerged from the bath, resist the urge to towel off. Instead air-dry, and don't wipe the baking soda off.
Oatmeal added to cool bathwater offers another wonderful relief for sunburned skin. Fill up the bathtub with cool water--not cold water because that can send the body into shock. Don't use bath salts, oils, or bubble bath. Instead, scoop 1/2 to 1 cup oatmeal -- an ideal skin soother -- and mix it in. Another option is to buy Aveeno, an oatmeal powder found in the pharmacy. Follow the packet's directions. As with the baking soda, air-dry your body and don't wipe the oatmeal off your skin.

2: Add Some Aloe Vera
The thick, gel-like juice of the aloe vera plant can take the sting and redness out of a sunburn. Aloe vera causes blood vessels to constrict. Luckily, this healing plant is available at your local nursery or even in the grocery store's floral department. Simply slit open one of the broad leaves and apply the gel directly to the burn. Apply five to six times per day for several days.

3: Apply a Cool Compress
Soak a washcloth in cool water and apply it directly to the burned areas (do not apply ice or an ice pack to sunburned skin) for several minutes, rewetting the cloth often to keep it cool. Apply the compress multiple times throughout the day as needed to relieve discomfort. You can also add a soothing ingredient, such as baking soda or oatmeal, to the compress water. Simply shake a bit of baking soda into the water before soaking the cloth. Or wrap dry oatmeal in a cheesecloth or a piece of gauze and run water through it. Then toss out the oatmeal and soak the compress in the oatmeal water.

4: Drink Water
As the sun fried your skin, it also dehydrated it. Be sure to replenish liquids by drinking plenty of water while recovering from a sunburn. Being well hydrated will help burns heal better. You'll know you're hydrated when your urine runs almost clear.

5: Cool Off With a Soak
Slipping into a tub of chilly water is a good way to cool the burn and ease the sting, especially if the burn is widespread or on a hard-to-reach area (such as your back). Avoid using soap, which can irritate and dry out the skin. If you feel you must use soap, use a mild one, such as Dove or Aveeno Bar, and rinse it off well. Definitely skip the washcloth, bath sponge, and loofah. Afterward, pat your skin gently with a soft towel. If you're tempted to linger in the tub for hours, skip the bath and take a cool shower, instead. Ironically, soaking too long can cause or aggravate dry skin, which can increase itching and peeling.

6: Moisturize
The sun dries out the skin's surface and causes cells and blood vessels to leak, causing even greater moisture loss. In addition, while cool baths and compresses can make you feel better, they can also end up robbing moisture from your injured skin. To prevent drying, apply moisturizer immediately after your soak. For cooling relief of pain and dryness, chill the moisturizer in the refrigerator before using.

7: Pat Down With Potatoes
The plain old potato makes for a wonderful pain reliever. It's a time-tested technique known throughout the world. Take two washed potatoes, cut them into small chunks, and place them in a blender or food processor. Blend or process until the potatoes are in liquid form. Add water if they look dry. Pat the burned areas with the pulverized potatoes. Wait until the potatoes dry, then take a cool shower. Another less messy method is to apply the mash to a clean gauze and place on the burn. Change the dressing every hour. Continue applying several times a day for a few days until the pain is relieved.

8: Use Cornstarch
Sunburns often strike where skin meets bathing suit. Sensitive and hard-to-reach spots you've neglected to smear with suntan lotion (along bikini lines, underneath buttock cheeks, or around the breasts and armpits) often fall victim. These burn spots then have to face daily irritation from tight elastic in bras and underwear. To ease chafing, cover the burned area with a dusting of cornstarch. Don't apply petroleum jelly or oils, which can exacerbate the burn by blocking pores. If the burn is blistering, however, don't apply anything.

9: Try a Topical Anesthetic
Topical anesthetics such as Solarcaine may offer some temporary relief from pain and itching. Look for products that contain lidocaine, which is less likely than some of the other topical anesthetics to cause an allergic reaction. Because some people do have allergic reactions to such products, test a small area of skin before using it all over. Topical anesthetics come in both creams and sprays. The sprays are easier to apply to a sunburn, especially when it is widespread. If you use one, avoid spraying it directly onto the face. Instead, spray some onto gauze and gently dab it on your face.

10: Take an OTC Pain Reliever
Nonprescription pain relievers such as aspirin and ibuprofen can relieve pain and cut the inflammation of a sunburn. Take with food as directed on the bottle, and discontinue use if you develop stomach upset. If you can't tolerate aspirin or ibuprofen, consider taking OTC acetaminophen, which can help ease pain but won't relieve inflammation. See this list of precautions to take when using over-the-counter analgesics.
No matter which home remedy solution you choose, remember the discomfort your sunburn has caused -- and next time, take precautions to avoid overexposure to the sun. Sunburn can be relieved naturally, but it is never good for the skin.

Tips To Remain Healthy

The  food you eat is crucial to virtually every bodily process and function. It paves the way for you to have a healthy baby, helps to prevent or promote disease, may sharpen or weaken mental acquity, may even affect your mood.

Many factors are involved in answering the question "what should I eat?". But here are some basic pointers to keep in mind - before you open your mouth

The Eight Point Plan:

  • Eat plenty of fiber, pulses, whole grains, foods made with wholegrain flour (such as wholegrain bread), and fruit and vegetables give you the benefit of fiber as well as its associated essential fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins. Grains are better only coarsely ground.
  • Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, especially green leafy ones. These give you the vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and fiber you need. Peel the fruit as little as possible (peel and pith are nutrient rich). Cook vegetables lightly by steaming or stir frying, and eat some raw everyday to benefit from their hormones and enzymes.
  • Cut down your fat intake ( especially saturated fat ). Choose fish, offal (organ meat), game, poultry, whole grains, pulses, nuts and seeds, or sprouted seeds, rather than red meat and cheese.
  • Cut down your sugar intake. Use sugar as flavoring rather than as a food. Avoid cakes, sweets, chocolates, biscuits, puddings, ice-creams, jam, fruits canned in syrup, soft drinks, sugar in tea and coffee, and milk shakes.
  • Cut down your salt intake. Instead of adding salt to your food use herbs, spices, fresh ginger, horseradish, lemon juice, tomato puree, vinegar, soy sauce, vegetable stock, yeast extract, chutney, and other flavorings.
  • Cut down your consumption of processed food to avoid the " empty calories" of saturated fats, added sugar,  refined cereal grains, and additives.
  • Drink only moderate amounts of alcohol.
  • If you are overweight, exercise more and consume the amount of food and drink that will enable you to reach and keep to your optimal body weight

Defeat Diabities Very Easily

Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by the decreased ability or complete inability of the tissues to utilize carbohydrates, accompanied by changes in the metabolism of fat, protein, water and electrolytes. The disorder is due to a deficiency or diminished effectiveness of the hormone insulin.

There are two common types of diabetes mellitus:

Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or type I: It usually occurs before the age of 40 years. The disease usually has an abrupt onset and the abnormality of carbohydrate metabolism is severe due to lack of endogenous insulin to control blood glucose levels. These diabetics require high doses of insulin.

Non-Insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) or Type II: This type usually occurs in middle life or beyond the age of 40 years, although it may also occur in the younger age group. The patients are most often obese. The onset is gradual and there is some amount though limited, of endogenous insulin.

General instruction for patients suffering from diabetes;

  • Keep strictly to your diet if any change is required then consult the dietician
  • If you do not feel well or if you are in difficulty about your medicine, consult the doctor.
  • If you are gaining or losing weight, inform your doctor
  • Test your urine regularly and get your blood examined once a month
  • Walk at least a mile daily.
  • Keep your skin clean and feet dry. Avoid wearing tight shoes and socks. Consult your doctor on any skin problems.
  • If you have any injury or you are going for an operation, declare to your doctor that you are a diabetic.
  • If any other problem worrying you, see the social worker / counselor.

Instructions to patients taking Insulin

  • Do not alter the dose of Insulin without consulting the doctor.
  • Do not allow more than an hour to elapse between a injection of Insulin and your food.
  • If you get a cold, sore throat or feverish illness, do not stop taking Insulin. Take plenty of milky food instead of solids, if it is difficult to swallow.

Prohibited Foods
Glucose, sugar , honey and all sweets, jaggery, ice-cream, pastries, cake, jam, jelly, squash, canned fruit juice, sugarcane juice, chocolates, bourn vita, all aerated waters except soda.

Foods to avoid

Green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, cucumber, radish, lime, clear soups, black coffee without milk and sugar, butter milk (lassie), sour chatnis and pickles without oil, pepper and zeera water, jamun fruit and karela juice.

Foods that help diabetics bring down sugar levels
Diabetics should fill up on leafy vegetables, bitter gourd (karela), papaya, oranges, lentils and legumes with strings and skin intact, whole grain cereals, bran, pulses, sprouted mung, and 10 to 20 grams of guar gum (from cluster beans)

A Healthy Diet

The food you eat reflects your beliefs about yourself, your spiritual being, the people important to you, and the world. You can change your diet to communicate your wish for a healthier self and society.

Take a delight in everything you eat and drink throughout the day. A variety of whole cereal grains, natural rice, beans in all their hues, lentils, chickpeas, nuts of different shapes, colorful fruits, the fascinating array of roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and seeds of vegetables in their myriad forms and textures, give you endless choice. Herbs and spices add subtle sensuality.
If you like meat, use it as an interesting, flavorful addition, feasting on it occasionally. If you eat a diet based on whole foods, thoughtfully prepared, you will almost certainly receive all the goodness you need and the best combination of nutrients. There is no need for nutritional supplements.

In fact all most people need is good food and not bad food plus pills.

The main components of a basic healthy diet are: proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and fiber. Most whole food contain many nutrients in varying proportions, so a variety of foods will give you a good balance. To eat well and feel healthy, choose whole, fresh, or carefully processed foods, and flavor those of vegetable origin.

Tips For Healthy Diet

The following basic guidelines are what you need to know to construct a healthy diet.

1 Eat plenty of high-fiber foods—that is, fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. These are the "good" carbohydrates—nutritious, filling, and relatively low in calories. They should supply the 20 to 30 grams of dietary fiber you need each day, which slows the absorption of carbohydrates, so there’s less effect on insulin and blood sugar, and provides other health benefits as well. Such foods also provide important vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals (plant chemicals essential to good health).

2 Make sure to include green, orange, and yellow fruits and vegetables—such as broccoli, carrots, cantaloupe, and citrus fruits. The antioxidants and other nutrients in these foods may help protect against developing certain types of cancer and other diseases. Eat five or more servings a day.

3 Limit your intake of sugary foods, refined-grain products such as white bread, and salty snack foods. Sugar, our No.1 additive, is added to a vast array of foods. Just one daily 12-ounce can of soda (160 calories) can add up to 16 pounds over the course of a year. Many sugary foods are also high in fat, so they’re calorie-dense.

4 Cut down on animal fat. It’s rich in saturated fat, which boosts blood cholesterol levels and has other adverse health effects. Choose lean meats, skinless poultry, and nonfat or low-fat or nonfat dairy products.

5 Cut way down on trans fats, supplied by hydrogenated vegetable oils used in most processed foods in the supermarket and in many fast foods.

6 Eat more fish and nuts, which contain healthy unsaturated fats. Substitute olive or canola oil for butter or stick margarine.

7 Keep portions moderate, especially of high-calorie foods. In recent years serving sizes have ballooned, particularly in restaurants. Choose a starter instead of an entrée, split a dish with a friend, and don’t order supersized anything.

8 Keep your cholesterol intake below 300 milligrams per day. Cholesterol is found only in animal products, such as meats, poultry, dairy products, and egg yolks.

9 Eat a variety of foods. Don't try to fill your nutrient requirements by eating the same foods day in, day out. It is possible that not every essential nutrient has been identified, and so eating a wide assortment of foods helps to ensure that you will get all the necessary nutrients. In addition, this will limit your exposure to any pesticides or toxic substances that may be present in one particular food.

10 Maintain an adequate calcium intake. Calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth. Get your calcium from low-fat sources, such as skim milk and low-fat yogurt. If you can't get the optimal amount from foods, take supplements.

11 Try to get your vitamins and minerals from foods, not from supplements. Supplements cannot substitute for a healthy diet, which supplies nutrients and other compounds besides vitamins and minerals. Foods also provide the "synergy" that many nutrients require to be efficiently used in the body.

12 Maintain a desirable weight. Balance energy (calorie) intake with energy output. Exercise and other physical activity are essential.

13 If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. That is one drink a day for women, two a day for men. A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 4 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits. Excess alcohol consumption leads to a variety of health problems. And alcoholic beverages can add many calories to your diet without supplying nutrients.

Hair Coloring Tips At Home

You may think dyeing your hair should be left to the professionals, but at-home hair color isn’t as intimidating as you might think. We asked expert colorists for their best prep and postdye hair care advice and their secrets to applying color evenly and making it last. We’ll walk you through the entire process with these 10 easy tips:

                                Daily-glow-article-woman-dyeing-hair-445x165

1. Select your shade:
If you’ve decided to use an at-home hair color kit, keep this in mind: “When you’re picking a color, if you’re going lighter, expect the color to be much warmer than what’s on the box,” says Nelson Chan, celebrity colorist. “If you’re going darker, the color is going to show cooler.”

Jet Rhys, owner of Jet Rhys Salons in San Diego, explains, “When using at-home hair color, the pigments are more exaggerated — for example, ash is flat, red is bright, gold is brassy. Your best bet is to pick shades that are neutral or warm. Avoid colors like magenta, cinnamon, sunflower. Instead look for butter rum, brown sugar, spiced topaz. The softer the name, the softer the result.”

Even if you think you’ve found the right shade, test it out before applying to your hair. “The best suggestion is, put it [the dye] on a little section, leave it on, and see if it’s too light, dark, or ashy — we do that at the salon all the time to test the color,” says Chan.

2. Find the right formula:
Now that you’ve found the right color, should you choose a permanent or semipermanent formula? “[It] depends on what you’re looking to do,” says Rita Hazan, celebrity colorist and owner of Rita Hazan Salon in New York City. “To go darker, use a semipermanent; to go lighter, use a permanent.” A semipermanent color will wash out in about 20 shampoos, says Rhys.

3. Deep condition for even color:
Rhys advises using a deep-conditioning treatment two weeks before dyeing your hair, because the strands are porous. “Think of a sponge with the tiny little holes — hair can become porous over time,” she says. Your hair may have been a bit abused from shampooing, heat styling, and daily wear. A mask will fill these little porous holes so that your color will be even, Rhys says.

4. Apply dye to dirty hair
In order for your hair to take color properly, don’t shampoo for one or two days before you dye, advises Chan. “Your hair cannot be too dirty or too clean,” he says. Plus, explains Michael Boychuck, of Color A Michael Boychuck Salon at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, “the natural oils protect your scalp from irritation, which can be caused by the ammonia in many dyes.

5. Avoid a messy situation.
“On your skin, use Vaseline or lotion to protect you from the color,” says Hazan. Apply a thin layer around your hairline and your ears.

Rhys also has strategies for staying mess free while you dye. “I suggest taking garbage bag liners and taping them to the wall behind you and to lay on your countertop,” she says. “Don’t apply color with a shirt on; just drape an old towel around you so you can just jump in the shower.

6. Paint (don’t squeeze) on color:
Rhys shares her step-by-step tips for applying color evenly. She says you should start by dividing your hair into four even quadrants, parting from forehead to nape and from ear to ear, “like a plus sign on your head.” Visit a beauty supply store and grab a color application brush. This allows you to apply the dye closer to the root, and the mixture will go on more evenly.

Work through the hair sections and save the hairline for the last 10 minutes. “This hair is baby fine and has the tendency to grab too dark as well as stain,” she explains. Her trick? Use a mascara wand or baby toothbrush to apply the dye around your hairline. Gently sweep the color around your hairline in an upward motion for the last 10 minutes using the mascara wand or baby brush.

7. Keep your rinse cool:
When you’re rinsing the color out, use cool water, Rhys says. The hair cuticle is lifted and the large color molecules can escape easily if the water is too warm. A cooler temperature will help seal the cuticle and prevent fading.

8. Start color-protecting in the shower:
To ensure your dye job stays vibrant for the longest amount of time possible, start by caring for your hair right after you’ve rinsed out the color. “Once the water runs clear, wash gently with a shampoo designated for color treated hair to remove any excess color from hair and scalp,” says Rhys. “Condition with the deep conditioner that is included with your box color, and leave in for five to 10 minutes to really help seal in color.”

9. Try this touch-up trick:
Boychuck offers this suggestion if you’ve got a lot of gray around the hairline that you want to touch up: Mix a capful of the hair color you’re using with a capful of peroxide. Use a cotton swab to apply this around your hairline. “It makes color last two to three weeks longer,” he says.

10. Make your shade last:
Leave-in conditioners can perform double duty, protecting your hair’s new color as well as protecting your strands from heat and styling damage, Boychuck says. If you’re going out in the sun, he advises wearing a hat or finding a hairspray with UV protection. Hazan suggests getting a trim. “If your ends are healthy, your hair looks shinier,”

The Beauty Benefits of Exercise

There are plenty of reasons to exercise. For some, it’s because you booked a beach vacation, while others are focused on staying healthy. No matter what your motivation is, we can all agree that the benefits of exercise are obvious. But there’s a stealthier payoff: healthy skin. Read on to learn more about the skin and beauty rewards that come from regularly working up a sweat.

Instant Glow:
When you get your heart pumping from aerobic exercise, you’re supplying your skin with a nice dose of oxygenated blood, says Noëlle S. Sherber, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist based in Baltimore, Maryland. “It gives you that great post-workout glow.”

Wrinkle Reduction:
Working out also helps maintain healthy levels of the stress-related hormone cortisol, Sherber says. “Elevated cortisol levels are linked to increased sebum production, which means more acne breakouts,” she says. Too much cortisol can also cause the collagen in the skin to break down, Sherber says, which can increase wrinkles and sagging. “Exercise actually supports the production of collagen,” says Amy Dixon, a Los Angeles–based exercise physiologist and celebrity trainer. “The boost in this protein helps to keep your skin firm, supple, and elastic.”

Acne Relief:
Regular exercise boosts circulation. “It nourishes your skin, bringing more blood flow and oxygen to it,” says Mauro C. Romita, M.D., a board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of Ajune Center for Beauty Synergy in New York City. “This will help draw toxins out of the body.” Plus, all that sweating cleans out the pores of congested skin. “Working out corrects the hormonal imbalance that can cause adult acne,” Romita says.

To reap the beneficial skin effects of working out, a few extra steps are required, Sherber warns. “If you're acne prone, make sure to keep gentle, fragrance-free cleansing wipes in your gym bag.” Be sure to cleanse your face and other areas that tend to break out immediately after exercising, she says. “For eczema, wear fabrics that wick perspiration away from the skin, since the wet-dry-wet-dry cycle will dry out your skin and provoke flare-ups,” Sherber says. And above all, avoid exercising with makeup on your face.

Healthier Hair:
The improved blood flow helps keep your hair stronger and healthier, Dixon says. This blood, full of nutrients, stimulates the hair follicles and promotes growth. “Exercise is also a big stress reliever,” she says. “Lower stress means your hair is less likely to be brittle and, worse, fall out.” Even if you’re as stress free as a cucumber, Dixon recommends checking with your dermatologist about any hair loss to rule out other causes.

As for the best type of exercise for your skin, Dixon says it’s all good. “Every modality will improve circulation and reduce stress,” she says, “but it’s a wise move to mix up your workouts as often as possible.” Try adding 30 minutes of a few simple yoga postures or a brisk walk to your day three times a week, Dixon says, to see the beauty returns in your hair and skin.

Reduce Your Smoking And Alcohol Intake

"Smoking and alcohol consumption (either alone or combined) causes irreversible optic nerve damage. As both nicotine and alcohol are nerve toxins, they affect the nerves in the long run. Over a period of time, this can lead to poor or weak eyesight,"
